As a Clinical Recruiter, I often hear candidates share their excitement around Two Chairs’ intentionality with diversity. There is so much value in building teams with diverse clinicians because it positively impacts the therapeutic alliance.
There is a new level of comfort when the burden of explaining the overall lived experience is removed. Clients do better in therapy when they feel understood. Clinicians do better work when they feel they belong. That is why diversity and inclusion in mental health care is not a side project at Two Chairs– it is part of how we deliver care.
At Two Chairs, we build that through required training, employee resource groups (ERGs), a diverse clinical team, and ways to connect across a remote company.
What does an inclusive workplace for mental health therapists look like?
Diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging (DEIB) are the principles guiding how we build our business and teams. Here is how that shows up:
- Required DEIB training for all clinicians, covering culturally responsive care, common myths, why DEIB matters, and key terms we use.
- Employee resource groups (ERGs) that offer clinicians a community around shared identities and experiences.
- Annual engagement survey which includes measures related to belonging and inclusion
Inclusion also shapes how people feel at work. Sha'terika Perkins, Director of Talent Acquisition, describes it this way:

How does workplace inclusion connect to better client care?
Clients open up more when they feel seen. That trust between client and clinician is called the therapeutic alliance, and research shows that it is one of the strongest predictors of positive treatment outcomes. It’s one reason our matching process considers a clinician’s background, such as gender, race or ethnicity, and sexual orientation, along with their expertise.
Language is another place where the therapeutic alliance is strengthened when there is common ground between client and therapist. According to the American Psychological Association, therapy is twice as effective when delivered in a patient's native language. At Two Chairs, 16% of clinicians are multilingual, covering 15 languages.

How diverse is the Two Chairs team?
Our clinical team includes hundreds of clinicians with 100+ clinical specialties and 32+ therapy modalities. Across our entire workforce:

Which employee resource groups does Two Chairs offer?
ERGs are employee-led communities that give people a place to connect, share experiences, and be themselves at work. We have five ERGs that also offer mentoring, networking, and career development support.
- BIPOC ERG: Amplifies the voices of Black, Indigenous, and People of Color through mentorship, development, and cultural celebration.
- Parents & Caregivers ERG: Supports employees balancing work and family.
- Neurodivergent ERG: Builds belonging through advocacy, education, and development.
- Pride ERG: A space for LGBTQIA+ employees to be their authentic selves.
- Women ERG: Supports women through mentorship, development, and advocacy for gender equity.
What's new? Affinity groups and regional culture hubs
Community is built around shared interests as much as shared identities. That is why we recently launched two new ways for our employees to connect. As Aubrey Harrison, our Director of DEIB & Internal Comms, put it:

10 new affinity groups
Each group has its own Google Space and Slack channel. They are casual and come-as-you-are. Clinicians can jump into the spaces that speak to them, swap recommendations, and meet colleagues they might not otherwise cross paths with.

14 regional culture hubs
Most of our team works remotely across the country. The hubs help colleagues feel more connected to people near them. We use them to share local news, plan a meetup, or say hello to a neighbor. Hubs are set up for regions with five or more employees, each with its own Google Space.
