Therapy in Oakland

Serving and supporting all identities through supportive, unbiased, and non-judgmental spaces in downtown Oakland and Alameda County, East Bay, Berkeley, Richmond, Emeryville, Walnut Creek, and San Leandro areas.

Our clinical director

Justin D'Avella, PsyD received his PsyD in Clinical Psychology from the Wright Institute in Berkeley, CA before becoming a Postdoctoral Fellow in the Child Trauma Research Program at the University of California San Francisco. He uses an integrative approach to psychotherapy, pulling from Accelerated Experiential Dynamic Psychotherapy (AEDP), psychodynamic, social justice, and mindfulness-based modalities.

Our clinical team

We have doctorate-level and masters-level psychotherapists (PhD, PsyD, LCSW and LMFTs) at our Oakland clinic, who practice a wide range of modalities and can address diverse mental health concerns. Using a wide variety of modalities including Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), and Psychodynamic Therapy, our mental health professionals are able to meet the needs of clients presenting with diverse mental health issues.

Insurance

We are an out-of-network provider and cannot adjust session prices on a sliding scale basis, but our dedicated Care Coordinators will work with you to make sure you get reimbursed for as much as possible, depending on your specific health insurance plan. Our Care Coordinations team has compiled helpful information about benefits and navigating insurance that you can find on our blog.

FSA / HSA

Flexible spending accounts (FSA) and health savings accounts (HSA) allow you to set aside money (before taxes). You can apply that to each appointment with us as a mental health care provider.

Out-of-Network Benefits

Depending on your out of network benefits, you may be able to get 60–80% of each session reimbursed after you meet your deductible.

Wellness Stipend

Can be offered by your employer as part of their wellbeing initiatives. Typically looks like monthly stipend that you can dedicate towards mental health services (i.e. therapy with us).

Starting care

Starting therapy at Two Chairs is simple. You can book a consult online or over the phone with a Care Coordinator (415.202.5159). We'll send you a link to complete your client profile with information about yourself before you attend your in-person consult. After your consult we'll match you with the right therapist for ongoing mental health care. You and your therapist will discuss your goals for care/positive change, and develop a custom treatment plan, with a strong therapeutic relationship at the center.

While we don't offer physical therapy to help overcome bodily injuries, we recommend this service in Oakland/Alameda County to help deal with the pain you may be suffering from.

If you or your loved ones have diagnoses that require more comprehensive care, we recommend these services, compiled by Alameda County.

While we don't offer family therapy, couples therapy, or marriage counseling for the time being in Oakland, there are Licensed Marriage and Family Therapists (LMFT) on staff who can deliver care for individuals looking to work on relationship or family issues. We also suggest this resource, but please check back as we continue to grow our services in the area.

Two Chairs has other conveniently-located clinics in the San Francisco Bay Area, including downtown San Francisco, Redwood City, and San Jose.
