Her motivation to work in the mental health field stems from her upbringing. Her dad was a Vietnam veteran and as a result suffered from PTSD. Their relationship suffered a great deal from him having PTSD as it kept him from being an active part of her life while she was growing up. She wasn't made aware of his PTSD until she was an adult but it motivated her to want to learn more about mental health and the impact it has on families, especially within the African American communities.
LaRonna is passionate about making mental health treatment more accessible and thinks accessibility, along with stigma, are major contributing factors in reluctance to mental health treatment in many African American communities and families.
